Ep. 77 Tap Dance Notes

Weekly Explorations in Tap Dance Land

GROOVES! We’re back with a medium tempo groove. Based on a CRAMP ROLL this groove just chugs along like the little engine that could. Mind the gap with it comes to the break. I once heard an interview with Jelly Roll Morton in which he said, “If it doesn’t have breaks, it ain’t jazz.” Well the breaks in this groove leave just enough space to create some tension, something the groove itself doesn’t necessarily do. Build the tension, then release it – that’s the way of groove making, songwriting, storytelling, and a few other creative endeavors. If it’s that pervasive it might be worth considering.

Breakdown available here (exclusively for paying subscribers).
