Ep. 50 Tap Dance Notes

Weekly Explorations in Tap Dance Land

Sep 5, 2023

Even rhythms are some of the hardest things to bring to life. They don’t leave a lot of space for what is happening in the body. While we hear a pleasant, evenly spaced, set of sounds the body is doing all sorts of gymnastics – shifting directions, holding and exerting energy, discovering balance. We don’t hear any of that. If we did, it would sound like a hiccup in the rhythm. Instead, with a step like this I can concentrate on the tonal journey, the dynamics and accents, and the challenges that come from centering those aspects of the step. What is it like to keep the landing of the PICKUP from being an accent? What is it like to work with, and then against, the natural dynamics of the step? These are the things a step like this brings up for me.

What do you think of this week’s step? Is there something you’d like me to me try in a Tap Dance Note? I’m game. Let me know by leaving a comment.
