Ep. 49 Tap Dance Notes

Weekly Explorations in Tap Dance Land

I’m sitting in the audience during a talkback of a wonderful show when one of the artists stands up and begins coordinating a sing-a-long of the tune Lean on Me. The tune has the staying power and poignancy of an old hymn or spiritual. So, when I was asked to choreograph a solo for a young dancer this year to this very song I was honored. What a wonderful message to bring to life in dance. Whenever I begin a working with a piece of music I improvise as a way of generating ideas. It’s my equivalent of a scratch pad. This step was on my scratch pad but didn’t make it into the final choreography. Have you ever had something that you found during a creative endeavor, didn’t use for the intended purpose, but wanted to keep around anyway? Yeah, me, too :-)

Breakdown available here (exclusively for paying subscribers).

What do you think of this week’s step? Is there something you’d like me to me try in a Tap Dance Note? I’m game. Let me know by leaving a comment.
