In this week’s talking note I explore the idea of material – the stuff that we are made of. In particular I talk about how sometimes we don’t know what that stuff is until we are cut – crossed or offended. Only then does the stuff deep within us – the stuff we try to hide from others and ourselves – come to the surface.
However, there may be a solution to being surprised by ourselves. Notably it is not achieving complete self-knowledge – an impossible task given our limited nature. Rather, being engaged in the process of spiritual formation, being an integral and active participant in the process who we become, with a trusted guide, offers a different way. With this way we may not have to wait to be cut to find out what is operating in us. Here, I propose a question that may shake some things loose from a habit of hiding, and nudge us towards being on top of the process.
