What Do You Eat?
We know that food affects the body. The systems of the body have to deal with what you feed them. They have to process the food, identify the good, and expunge the bad. But what about what we are feeding our soul?
What do the news, stories, music, and images that we take in on a continual basis do to our inner being? Our intake of media is almost nonstop during the waking hours in current urban and connected cultures. How are we adapting to accommodate this new normal? Let us pause and think for moment what our bodies would do to us if we ate every moment we were awake.
While some of the media we take in we can’t escape (public advertising), we can specifically curate and turn off many other forms (radio, television, netflix, etc.). We can be more sure that the media we are taking in is fruitful to the health and wellbeing of our soul. We can adjust our schedule of intake to allow time for processing, identification of the good, and expunging of the bad.
If we don’t, the media creators and the media culture has gotten the better of us. But if we do make choices to strategically choose what we watch, listen to, and read, and take time away from the firehose to process, we just might have a fighting chance.
