In this week’s Talking Note I explored the idea that words are carriers of ideas and expressed in three distinct ways – written, spoken, and embodied. I proposed these varied expressions sit on a spectrum that make the ideas more real as we move from experiencing the words in written to embodied form. While coaching is most often forward focused (geared towards achieving goals, and transformation towards action, for example) part of the most transformative moments can involve an unveiling of the ideas that we’ve considered foundational.
These ideas are often less taught than caught. They are the things that we live out without consideration, reflection, or articulation, unless we find need to do so. Such needs arise when we encounter a problem, a desire to change, or need to communicate for example. Instead of waiting for such things, I’ve used the following question to engage with the ideas that undergird my choices – particularly with regards to my life.
