The Middle
In the world of stereotypes the Lebanese people are known for being amazing tradespeople. Maybe it’s a consequence of their claimed Phoenician heritage. Trading with all settlers along the mediterranean as well as caravans from the silk road. At any rate their ability to facilitate a deal, to buy and sell, has a reputation.
The talent for occupying the middle is not only useful in the market. In institutions, nations, and societies, the space of the middle is unique. It allows for observation, facilitation of connection, and the exchange of ideas.
Today’s societies have lost their middle. Individuals can curate their own media intake, friendships, and communities. The space necessary for exchange as become occupied (almost overrun) by prescriptive voices, not facilitators of conversation.
Are you one of the people who’ve recognized this shift? Are you sensitive to the need for a middle space, and mourn its loss? If so, drop me a line here. I want to hear from you.
