The Assumption of Separation

It seems that there is an assumption of separation. We assume that wealthy people live, dine, and sit in different places than the “rest of us.” That the tracks divide the towns. That language is an insurmountable barrier. That separation equals protection.

Sometimes that may be true.

But what if our assumptions were different? What if we grew up with the assumption of unity? Then any separation would be considered discord and work would be done to prevent it.

We should note that the accumulation and consolidation of power is more efficient when communities are separated. Power structures can also leverage the discord that arises from division for their own benefit. Unity in its broader sense is a defense against such discord, leverage, accumulation, and consolidation.

What would we be doing differently if unity was the assumption?
