On August 8, 2025, at the Treasure Valley Institute for the Creative Arts in Boise, ID, I will attempt something that has never been done before. A tap dancer has never tap danced this long for the sake of this message. Twelve hours of tap dancing to bring attention to the call to endure a dark night.
A dark night of the soul – the isolation, pain, and grief – is common to many. The endurance required to get through a dark night can be bolstered by connection and encouragement. I aim to embody both, saying in effect, “You are not alone – watch and see. You can make it through the night – here is a way. Have you already made it through? I see you.” My hope in bringing this project to life is to encourage others wherever they may find themselves in the dark night.
The Project
Dark Night is a multifaceted project centering around a 12hr solo tap dance meditation. The live event will feature immersive projections, and opportunities for audience interaction, in addition to my dancing – creating a space of contemplation, reflection, and honoring.
Live events are notorious for their ephemeral nature. With a project like Dark Night, it is especially important that the message to live beyond the 12hr live event. We are going to do this in four ways:
Digital Storytelling – Before, during, and well beyond the live event, the Dark Night website will be a place for visitors to interact with the idea of a dark night and find encouragement to endure.
Short Film – The Dark Night Short Film, telling the story of the live event and what it might be like to endure the night, will be submitted to film festivals and available for screening for individuals, groups, and institutions.
Photo Book – The Dark Night Photo Book will memorialize the live event – the dancing, audience reflections, and my own personal reflections as well as those of other members of the creative team – in a physical way.
Teaching Resources – For those eager to dive deeper into the ideas brought to life in the Dark Night Project, teaching resources will be available. These resources will focus on the idea of the dark night, how and when it often shows up, the spiritual formation that occurs because of it, and how one might come to endure their own dark night.
A project of this scope and maginitude can’t be done alone. I have an amazing award winning creative team committed to the project, the venue is confirmed, but I need you, too. Here are three things you can do:
Save the Date – August 8, 2025 (Boise, ID)
Tell your friends – They can connect with me here, here, or here, and they’ll be sure to receive updates.
Consider Joining the Dark Night Producers Circle (see below)
While the venue and team are confirmed, we still have some of the budget to raise. With production beginning in April, we have just enough time to get it all done.
If you are inspired to be a part of bringing this project to life, I have created a special invitation for you to join the Dark Night Producers Circle. This is a unique opportunity to support this project in a significant way and get behind the scenes, early access to project releases, and more.
You’ve been an ongoing supporter of my work, and I am eager to continue to share this journey with you.
