Doing the Work
In this blog post I wrote about a moment where my life changed. I was caught off guard by the penetrating question of a new friend and the words that came out of my mouth in response. The question:
What are you supposed to be doing?
My answer lead to some dramatic changes in practice, focus, and work.
Here’s the thing. Before this, I would never have thought that I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing. I had a thriving career, the love and support of my family, and I was content with what provision I had. Everything was all good - at least on the right path. Or so it seemed.
It obviously wasn’t.
What we are supposed to be doing is the work that only we can do. With our unique makeup of personal revelations, experience, insight, gifts, and skills. Whether the commercial market values such work or not has no bearing on the equation. We have to do the work that is set before us. Otherwise, you know what happens? Nothing. No confessions, no repentance, no forgiveness, no reconciliation, no coming out from under the burden of guilt.
No. Doing the work is better.
