In an individualistic culture the common questions center the individual. Naturally. Even in the context of one-to-one coaching, the individual is paramount. The change is happening on an individual basis. All other things being equal, or rather consistent, it is the individual who grows, adapts, and changes. In this way, their thinking, environment, even relationships are reframed. Everything changes when one part of the whole ecosystem changes. However, this approach to change misses out on the reality of life as something that happens in the context of relationship.
Even change happens in the context of relationship. Professional coaching, whether skills-based or otherwise is a professionalized version of what close friends and elders in a community used to do with others. When thinking about my own journey, especially in working with others who find themselves isolated, there is power in asking questions that press into the reality of relationship. This week’s question is one of them.
Who might you bring with you?
