First poverty, now mourning. I seem to be on a roll of hitting the hard topics. Well, when you take up the idea of following someone, you just kind of have to do what comes next. So here we are, walking together through the hard things, for the sake of what comes after. Just in case we need a quick reminder, what comes after is a qualitatively new kind of life. One with God to degrees that the foils of the world cannot penetrate. One in which our personal and communal experience of love overpowers the momentum of the world around us towards other things. Envisioning such a life just might give us the courage to face the pain of past and present circumstances, future anxieties, and everything in between. We might just be willing to go through a series of questions that are aimed at unearthing the things we haven’t yet mourned, so that we might receive comfort and be free from their burden.
