Today I finally launched The Breakdowns. I had talked about this way back in November of 2025. Sometimes what we hope to do doesn’t actually pan out, but I am a firm believer in follow through. So, as Gregory Hines used to say, “Better late, than early.”
If you’ve been here for a while you know that The Breakdowns began as an extension of my personal practice. Every week I’d walk into the studio, find a step, and then record a breakdown. Today they evolve from a former section on this Substack to a part of an ecosystem of offerings designed specifically for tap dancers who find themselves ready for the next step in their journey.
Whether you are on the road, have outgrown your local teacher, or just want access to a different approach to the craft, The Breakdowns are for you.
And they complete a full slate of offerings that include The Method (a book), The Breakdowns (videos), Virtual Coaching (access to a person, that is me), and PlayTime (apparel with a message).
Everything that I’ve done feels part of a creative endeavor. With this view, The Breakdowns completes an endeavor to create a kind of ecosystem of support for tap dancers who want to go deeper, experience an older way of interacting with the craft, and express themselves while doing it. With this ecosystem you get textual reference, video learning, apprenticeship across distance, and apparel that speaks to the journey. They are all aligned, all pointing to the same path, and all encouraging the same approach.
No cognitive dissonance. No conflicting advice. Just a path that gets you to where you want to go – right in the middle of Tap Dance Land.
I’ve always hesitated to share what I know – I had to be convinced of my responsibility to teach what I do know before accepting to take on my first teaching job years ago. But this feels right – even complete – with a foundational text, an archive of demonstrative videos, access to personal training, and a way to celebrate or remind you of the path. After making all of this, I might have a nice rest!
Thanks for being a part of this journey. Sharing this part of my practice with you has been an encouragement. You can check out The Breakdowns in their new home at https://tapdancebreakdowns.com.
